Learners clean Hennops River as part of outreach programme

“Such a hardworking bunch. They were not afraid to get their hands dirty or do what it takes to clean up our dear Hennops River.”

About 60 learners of all grades from Cornwall Hill College participated in cleaning up the Hennops River at Irene Club, Centurion, on Friday.

“It was such an exceptional morning spent with the group of volunteers from Cornwall Hill College,” said NPO founder Tarryn Johnston.

“Learners from all grades participated as part of a community outreach programme hosted by the school.

“Such a hardworking bunch. They were not afraid to get their hands dirty or do what it takes to clean up our dear Hennops River.”

Johnston said 549 bags of waste was removed in just three hours.

“What a remarkable achievement by these youngsters!”

The learners started at 08:00 and continued working hard until noon, she said.

“Well done, boys and girls. And a great big thank you for taking the next step towards a clean environment.”

Johnston also expressed her gratitude towards the teachers of the school for making the project possible, “and for choosing Hennops Revival as part of your school’s outreach programme”.

She said all bags were sponsored by Italpac, fresh drinking water sponsored by Oasis Water, and waste collection by the Tshwane metro.

“This clean-up was sponsored and made possible by Moyo.”

Johnston said they were also awaiting test results of samples of the river water taken last week.

“The river was foul-smelling last week and at times it was running black too.

“We managed to take a sample, but unfortunately the blackness had passed at that stage which is rather disappointing, considering that the results the previous week indicated such a major improvement in water quality.”

She said all their water quality testing was sponsored by water testing company Talbot The Art of Water.

“Much gratitude for this valuable testing, and for empowering us with resources to keep our community informed.”
