Man arrested with toy gun used in armed robbery

On Monday, March 7 a group of students that were standing at a bus stop, were robbed of their phones at gunpoint.

Pretoria West police spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma said a man was arrested on a charge of armed robbery while the other was arrested on a charge of possession of dagga.

“On Monday, March 7, a group of students that were standing at a bus stop, were robbed of their phones at gunpoint,” she said.

Vuma explained that the students hurried to the police station to report it.

“One of the students recalled the number plate of the vehicle the robbers were travelling in. We searched the number plate and it showed the owner and his address,” she said.

Police went to the address and found a man who said it was his nephew who usually drove the vehicle.

The man was then said to have given the police his nephew’s address in Atteridgeville.

“Upon arrival, police found the toy gun used in the robbery and arrested the suspect,” Vuma said.

SAPS officers attached to the K9 unit in Soshanguve were alerted by a passerby of a man who was selling dagga under the guise of running a tuck shop while conducting their patrol duties.

“The K9 police immediately visited the Lotus Gardens address and, upon arrival found the burglar door closed, but the door open.

“They knocked and a man came out, but when requested to open the burglar door, he said he had to fetch the keys,” she said.

Vuma said while they waited, one of the officers heard a plastic shuffling on the other side.

“This was a clear indication to them that something was being hidden,” she said.

Vuma said nothing was found when they searched the house.

“Upon searching the garage, police requested to search a locked Volkswagen Caravelle. A plastic bag was discovered with dagga and the owner was immediately detained for possession of dagga,” she said.
