Crime increases in Sinoville policing precinct

“This includes gender-based violence – our fifth-highest crime reported at the Sinoville police station,” says spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.

An increase in several crimes was recorded in the Sinoville policing precinct in recent months, spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said.

He said the increase in these crimes was recorded from December 1, 2021.

“All types of robberies, including attempted robberies, are our highest crimes reported,” he said.

Van Dyk said these robberies occurred on the streets of Sinoville and even in shopping centres around the area with bags, cellphones, and other valuables being stolen.

“Housebreaking and business break-ins are also high,” he said.

Another crime category that recorded an increase was commercial crimes which included both fraud and attempted fraud.

“With the fraud cases victims have recorded, many were buying goods from electronic media online platforms which were neither trusted nor known platforms or websites. Some even buy from private persons,” Van Dyk said.

In some instances, the hopeful buyer had neither seen the goods they intended to purchase nor the seller thereof.

“A holding deposit is requested and once it is made, the contact person can no longer be reached,” he explained.

He encouraged potential buyers to only make purchases from reputable or known people or platforms they know will deliver the goods they ordered.

Van Dyk further said the theft of motor vehicles continued to be a problem.

“Theft of motor vehicles is an ongoing problem in the Sinoville policing area,” he said.

He urged members of the community to ensure their car doors were locked and valuables locked away in the boot when they arrived at their destinations.

“They should not display any valuables or leave them lying around in the vehicle while they were in shopping centres or when visiting friends and family in the residential areas,” Van Dyk said.

The last, but also worrisome, crime category to record an increase was assault.

“This includes gender-based violence – our fifth-highest crime reported at the Sinoville police station,” he said.

Van Dyk said they were working hard to tackle the occurrence of such incidents through their regular awareness campaigns and by working closely with the Sinoville Crisis Centre to assist victims report cases and empowering victims.

“We have our awareness campaigns on a continuous basis and through that we are getting more and more cases and individuals coming forward to report abuse,” he said.
