Law enforcement raids tuck shops to seize expired goods

Our main aim is to promote the social well-being of consumers and prevent their exploitation or harm.

The Cullinan police, together with other law enforcement teams, raided several spaza shops suspected of selling expired food and goods on Tuesday morning.

This follows Refilwe residents refusing to sit back and watch as local shops sell expired food and report the matter to the police.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Connie Moganedi said the Cullinan police in conjunction with the TMPD and health inspectors embarked on a shop compliance operation following several complaints.

“Operation shop compliance is not a once-off operation. We are going to continue with these operations until all the spaza shops and tuck shops comply with the health act,” said Moganedi.

Police provided support to health inspectors by ensuring the execution of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 (CPA), aimed at promoting a fair, accessible and sustainable marketplace for consumer products and services.

“Our main aim is to promote the social well-being of consumers and prevent exploitation or harm,” said Moganedi.

Several shops were visited and found to be in contravention of the Consumer Protection Act and more than R20 000 worth of fines were issued.

The shops were fined for wrongfully and intentionally handling or permitting food to be handled at food premises or where a certificate of acceptability has not been issued or where all expired foods were not removed from the shelves.

Moganedi said the expired goods found were immediately removed and destroyed.

She urged the community to continue reporting any shop that does not comply with CPA or that sells expired goods or foods, by dialling 08600 10 111.
