Theft out of motor vehicles “problematic” in CBD
Pretoria CBD community has been urged to refrain from parking in public areas that is without security.
Police have warned motorists against parking in unsecured spots in the Pretoria CBD following a spike in theft from cars in the area.
Problem areas include Madiba, Bosman and Paul Kruger streets, especially around the North Gauteng High Court vicinity, according to police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.
This comes after several cases had been reported related to belongings disappearing from vehicles.
He said most of the areas within the city had, however, also seen an increase in motor vehicle thefts since the lockdown restrictions had been eased and people had returned to work.
“Criminals are capitalising on the fact that most drivers leave their vehicles unattended throughout the day,” Nkhumise said.
“Motorist will park their vehicles in the problem areas and some will get to a point where they entrust unknown people to wash their vehicles then later find out that their valuables are missing.”

He said motorists should take note of the following:
– Ensure that you don’t leave valuables such as cellphones, laptops, iPads or any electronics in your vehicles.
– When parking, a motorist must physically test if the doors and windows are completely closed. Criminals jam vehicles to get access to your car.
– Do not hand anyone your keys no matter how well you think you know them.
– Use designated parking areas within the city.
Nkhumise said individuals could contact the police hotline at 08600 10111 should they have any information to report on theft out of motor vehicles.
