Motorists urged to be vigilant

Two police stations in the north of Pretoria recorded increases in motor vehicle theft incidents.

Motorists were once again urged to be vigilant when they parked their vehicles in and around Pretoria.

“In an attempt to address the proliferation of motor vehicle-related crime, the SAPS is urging community members to remain vigilant when parking their vehicles in public spaces,” police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said.

His warning to motorists came a few days after Sinoville police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said that theft of motor vehicles continued to be a problem in the area.

“The theft of motor vehicles is an ongoing problem in the Sinoville policing area,” he said.

Last week, police in Pretoria North also said they recorded an increase in the number of vehicles that were being stolen in their precinct.

Combined, the police officers offered motorists these safety tips:

– Ensure that no valuables such as money, cellphones, laptops, tablets or any other electronic devices are visibly left in the vehicle

– When leaving the vehicle, physically test if the doors and windows are locked and completely closed before walking away

– Do not hand anyone your keys, regardless of how well you think you know the person

– Park in designated parking bays

– Install gear lock systems

Members of the community were urged to report any related suspicious activity to their nearest police station, by calling the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or by leaving an anonymous tip-off on the MySAPS App.
