Blood donors to donate blood to ‘bail’ others out of jail

A creative and fun way to encourage people to donate blood.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) calls on all possible donors in Pretoria to join its “Jail and Bail” event on Monday, 21 March.

The event will be held at the Bougainville shopping centre.

SANBS donor recruiter Nyiko Mkhabe said they have come up with a creative and fun way to encourage people to donate blood.

“This includes voluntary donors playing the role of ‘jail birds’ on the day. They encourage potential donors to come and donate blood to ‘bail them out’ of jail.

“The purpose of this event is to get many people to come and donate blood during this public holiday to increase our blood stocks leading to the Easter period.

“Over the past few weeks, there was a significant decrease in bloodstock levels. This can have dire consequences to the supply of blood to the patients who need it the most,” she said.

Mkhabe said a specific number of voluntary blood donors were approached to take part in this event.

“We have six ‘jail birds’ of which each one needs to bring 10 donors to ‘bail’ them out.

“We hope to collect 100 units of blood, which will assist up to 300 patients in hospitals,” she said.

“We have included quite a few stakeholders from the community for this event.”

Mkhabe said they would continue to hold such events throughout the year to get people into the culture of donating blood.

Anyone who wants to make a difference and is concerned about the well-being of mothers at childbirth, burn victims, cancer patients, kids with leukaemia, must meet the below criteria to donate blood:

– Weigh at least 50kg.

– Between the age of 16-75 years.

– Be in good health.

– Lead a low-risk lifestyle.

– Consider your blood to be safe for transfusion.

– Have a snack or meal four hours before donation.
