Police send warning to liquor traders

“Refrain from operating illegally and operating beyond operating hours as 02:00 is closing time.”

The Bronkhorstspruit police have sent a stern warning to liquor traders who do not comply with operating hours as stipulated by their liquor licences.

Police spokesperson Contable Munyadziwa Ramovha said some of the establishments in the area were operating beyond the allowed hours.

“We would like to sensitise them to refrain from operating illegally and operating beyond operating hours as 02:00 is closing time,” she said.

“Those whose liquor licence doesn’t allow on-site consumption must refrain from allowing their customers to drink on their premises.”

Ramovha said some people were selling alcohol without liquor licences.

She said most of the reported of common assault cases were liquor-related and emanating from drinking joints.

On Wednesday, a liquor outlet was closed and liquor confiscated at Zithobeni extension 3, Bronkhorstspruit.

She warned liquor traders and consumers alike, saying that both had the obligation to be responsible.

“On the same day near the Zithobeni outlet at around 23:00, a 33-year-old was arrested for drinking and driving,” she said.

“We encourage business owners to work together with the police in fighting crime.”

What you need to to get a liquor licence:

– SAPS clearance: You need a SAPS clearance certificate confirming that you do not have a criminal record. This step can take up to six weeks, so start with this before you do the rest. Take a copy of your ID and R59 to your local SAPS during office hours. Ask them to do your fingerprints for the purpose of an application for a liquor licence.

– Premises: You need premises before you can even apply for a liquor licence. The public area must not be less than 50 square metres. The ideal is that your premises are 500m or more from a church, school or similar business.

– SARS clearance: Apply for your tax clearance certificate at SARS. If the applicant is a juristic person such as a company, the tax clearance must be in the name of the company otherwise the tax clearance certificate must be in the name of the applicant/s.
