Community helps the elderly with water

After a local retirement home was left without water due to service delivery protests, the community response was overwhelming. The home was "literally flooded with donations" including 400 litres of water donated by a local supermarket chain.

This week the Rusoord Centurion, home for the aged, was running low on water because the illegal municipal strikers were preventing metro teams repairing a leak.

Management of the home requested the community in the vicinity to drop off water in containers at the Potgieter Road entrance, said DA councillor David Farquharson.

He said the Centurion community opened their taps to Rusoord.

“The main water pipe was damaged on Tuesday and the pipe was not repaired and Rusoord was without water.”

He said on Thursday night manager Marianne Jordan contacted him and asked him to issue an appeal for water. “The community response was overwhelming and Rusoord was literally flooded with donations, the residents and SPAR were very generous.

SPAR alone supplied 400 litres in total,” Jordan said.

“A few hundred litres are being held near the old age home for future needs. For the moment the home is supplied with water,” Jordan said.

The city was making every effort to evade the intimidators and repair the pipe, said Farquharson.

“The Tshwane metro technicians have gradually begun the process of restoring power to some areas that have experienced prolonged outages amid the threats and intimidation that they have been subjected to by employees that are involved in an unlawful and unprotected strike action.”

Rekord reported earlier Tshwane has experienced a series of outages affecting at least four regions due to the strike.

The city administration has now enlisted the services of law enforcement who are escorting teams to attend to service interruptions in a bid to clear the backlog occasioned by the protest action which started on Tuesday, March 15.

From Thursday evening various teams started going out to attend to service interruptions and will ramp up the operations despite the depleted capacity of personnel who are being forcibly removed from offices and prevented from performing their duties for which they are remunerated.

Power has also been restored in Laudium, a portion of Valhalla and Erasmia.

Other areas such as Rua Vista, Thatchfield, a portion of The Reeds and Olievenhoutbosch had power restored last, but it went off again due to cable theft which tripped the main substation.

“We would like to appeal to our residents to continue to log complaints via the city’s customer care channels. If your outage is extended please escalate to your ward councillor (with a COT reference number) and they will be able to escalate to your regional electricity team.

“The City of Tshwane profusely apologises for this inconvenience and hope to restore full services to its valued residents and customers as soon as it’s practically possible.”

The management of Rusoord thanked the generous members of the community for their kind response.
