Three arrested for tampering with cables in Soshanguve

"They were found tampering with electricity and damaging essential infrastructure."

Three people were arrested by the cable theft unit of the Tshwane metro police department (TMPD) in the early hours of Saturday.

Officers were attending to a complaint about an illegal electricity connection in Soshanguve Block XX, north of Pretoria, when the arrests took place.

The trio was arrested for tampering with electricity and damaging essential infrastructure.

“Upon arrival (of the officers), they (the suspects) were found tampering with electricity,” a TMPD social media post read.

Almost two weeks ago, the TMPD was forced to escort some of its employees, predominantly attached to the electricity department, to attend to power outages in various parts of the metro as a result of strike action other employees embarked on over a wage dispute.

During a TV interview, mayor Randall Williams said some metro officials had embarked on strike action to bully him into agreeing to a “ridiculous” wage agreement.

He also said some of the striking workers were sabotaging the metro’s property and infrastructure to create power outages.
