Cops seize vehicle with false plates
The driver locked the vehicle and fled the scene.
Police in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, seized a vehicle with false number plates after they followed up on a complaint on Tuesday.
“The complaint was received by visible policing commander Colonel Celia Napo telephonically at about 11:30 from a community member who observed two unknown men exchanging number plates from a silver-grey Nissan Juke and silver Polo at Soshanguve Crossing mall,” Constable Nhlanhla Zondi said.
Following swift action by the police, the Polo was stopped.
“The driver was stopped in block K, about a kilometre or two from where the vehicles were spotted,” he said.
The driver, however, locked the vehicle and fled the scene.
Zondi said after the vehicle’s registration number and VIN number were tested, it was discovered that it belonged to a different vehicle. The VIN number belonged to the Polo, but with a different registration number.
“The abovementioned vehicle was linked to a few robberies around the Soshanguve area,” he said.
Zondi added that the robbery cases were recent events.
“The vehicle was impounded by the police for further inquiries and investigation.
On Tuesday, police in the Sinoville area arrested three people after they were found in possession of car-breaking implements and being in contravention of the Electronics Communication Act as electronic signal jammers were found in their possession.
“Investigations will continue to establish their involvement in other motor vehicle theft cases in the Sinoville SAPS policing precinct,” spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said.
