Murder accused trial will soon start

Senior prosecutor Anne-Marie Bendeman said the case was postponed to May 30, for completion of investigation and director of public prosecution’s instruction on the case to be heard at the Pretoria high court.

The case of murder accused Tinyiko Shaun Sekwane (27) of Mamelodi East, has been postponed to May 30, for further investigations.

Sekwane appeared at the Mamelodi magistrate’s court on Wednesday morning with his attorney not present.

He is accused of the murder of six-year-old Olwethu Zwane in Mamelodi East, section 17 and was arrested last year in October.

Zwane’s lifeless body was found underneath the accused bed at his (the suspect) grandmother’s house.

Senior prosecutor Anne-Marie Bendeman said the case was postponed to May 30, for completion of investigation and director of public prosecution’s instruction on the case to be heard at the Pretoria high court.

The accused was denied bail on two occasions.

“His first bail application was last year on November 2 and bail was refused. Early this year on February 7 the accused applied for another bail application based on new facts and it was also denied,” said Bendeman.

The accused remains in police custody.

The residents who came in their numbers to support the Zwane family said they were happy with the court decision and the announcement that the investigation is nearly completed and trial would soon start.

Residents, joined by schoolchildren, protested outside the court, demanding that the accused not be granted bail.

Other community members with mixed emotions wished the court could hand over the suspect to the public “to deal with him”.

Themba Masango from #NotInMyNameInternational said they were there to support the family and to call for justice.

“We want to make sure the perpetrator does not see another day of light again,” said Masango.

“The accused has taken an innocent life and so he has to stay behind bars for the rest of his life.”

Masango said they called on the court to deal with the case speedily and the accused must get a fitting sentence to the crime he committed.

Mother, Nomsa Zwane (44) said finally there was hope for her son in the justice system and she wished that the court could speed up the process and begin with the trial.

The Zwane family was supported by the Women’s Brigade from Mamelodi, community members, youth and schoolchildren.
