Local organisation helps male victims of GBV
Spiritual healer, Dr Makgokela Thongwana (49) from Mamelodi East, section 14 said the organisation was formed because the government turns a blind eye when it comes to the abuse of men.
A Mamelodi-based NPO offers help to male victims of gender-based violence (GBV).
Tlaishego Foundation offers counselling, advice and accommodation since 2004.
Spiritual healer, Dr Makgokela Thongwana (49) from Mamelodi East, section 14 said the organisation was formed because the government turns a blind eye when it comes to the abuse of men.

“Our organisation took an initiative upon our shoulders to help the community to stop GBV in families in our country.
“Our achievement and goals have a made a significant impact and difference in the lives of the people,” said Thongwana.
He added that it was encouraging that more men were coming forward to seek help for GBV, “which is a step in the right direction towards the eradication of GBV from society”.
“The main reason why our organisation was established was in response to what is currently happening in our country, so many cases of domestic abuse/GBV are reported daily. So many women are being murdered by men, while we also have men who are also victims of such violence,” said Thongwana.
The foundation also opened a YouTube channel called Issues of Men Revelation Platform 2022 where the organisation shares videos of victims to raise awareness and to educate the community about the dangers of GBV.
“We turned our office into a facility to provide counselling, advice, medical video recording and working on accommodation services for the male victims of abuse,” he said.
The foundation helps male victims from the age of 25 years and above including married men.
Thongwana said he was once a victim too. He is also a writer and singer, Kgoshi MTgobs.
He wrote a book called Striving to live in 2013 and released a single album called Taizhou – both royalties going towards Tlaishego Foundation.
Thongwana said his main goal this year was to build a big facility that will accommodate about 100 male victims of GBV, sporting and recreational facilities for proper rehabilitation of victims.
He added that they also want to open a TV channel for male victims of GBV that will be used as a platform to expose this evil and raise awareness on a national scale.

However, the foundation can only achieve its goal with the help of generous donations from supporters and community members.
