Soshanguve rapper aims for the top

P Jones advised youngsters who wants to do hip-hop music to stay away from gangsters and have good role models for them to grow.

“With getting support from other people, you can still do it.”

This is the motto that the co-founder of NJ Group independent record label, Phillip Mohlabeng (28) also known as P Jones is living up to.

Born and bred in Soshanguve, P Jones was motivated and shown love by his parents.

“My parents taught me love and respect, and I trust in the Lord that I will get far.

“As an artist I started at a young age, I was only five when I fell in love with hip-hop.

“I grew up listening to many hip-hop songs and there was this guy providing me with CDs,” he said.

P Jones said that for him to be an artist, he was influenced positively by Tupac and Biggies music.

“I started writing my own songs in 2009, then recorded my single in 2013.

“I performed in schools and clubs and I was very determined with what I was doing,” he said.

P Jones said he then moved to Johannesburg where he met A-Reece.

“That’s when I started working with him using his studio to record my music,” he said.

P Jones said he then launched his own record label but it didn’t work.

As passionate as he was, he formed another record label with his brother Thabo Nkosi from the East Rand.

“I then recorded a song that I featured Priddy Ugly and Saudi in the music video.

“I got inspired by the way Saudi does his work so I started exploring around with him.”

P Jones said channel O and radio stations SABC played their song.

“I have featured Emtee the hustler as well as Clutchboi from USA Tucson, Arizona.

“I have also dedicated a song to my mum called ‘Emakhaya’,” he said.

P Jones advised youngsters who wants to do hip-hop music to stay away from gangsters and have good role models for them to grow.

“With hip-hop you do a lot of things to make money, like starting your own business and have a record label to sign people.

“I have two singles coming up with a visual album that will follow later this year,” he said.

P Jones said he would like to feature Cassper Nyovest in future.
