Pretoria CBD police, Hawks receive major crime-fighting boost

The boost comes in after police recently warned motorists against parking in unsecured spots in the Pretoria CBD following a spike in theft from cars in the area.

Pretoria Central police received six vehicles to assist in strengthening service delivery within its policing precinct.

Police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said “the vehicles received would cover areas such as attending to complaints, patrols, investigations and ensuring compliance by the community”.

He said the vehicles were additional tools gained by the police station from the previous financial budget, allocated to various stations in accordance to their needs.

Both the station commander Brigadier Moses Dladla and detective head Colonel Ndala received the vehicles allocated to various units comprising of the detectives, visible policing, serious and violent crimes.

Dladla said, “this will have a good impact on the community service and ensuring that there is a quick response to any matters that needs police assistance.

“This will ensure a continuous effort by the men and women in blue to ensure crime prevention.”

This also comes as on Tuesday, vehicles and laptops were set to be allocated to the provinces, components and units within the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

The Hawks is responsible for the combating, investigating and preventing national priority crimes such as serious organised crime, serious commercial crime and serious corruption.

Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said the Hawks received 88 vehicles and 100 laptops.

The national head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya said the vehicles are in addition to the previous 214 that were handed over by the Deputy Minister of Police in February 2022.

“This means that 176 members will have new wheels, which will undoubtedly accelerate their movement.”

In his address the Minister of Police, General Beki Cele said the government was hard at work in addressing the capacity and resource shortcomings within the security and justice system.

Cele said that work was underway to re-capacitate the country’s security apparatus including appointing experienced professionals in the right positions.

The National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, in giving the message of support said, “We can’t keep pumping resources without positive results”.

Deputy Minister Cassel Charlie Mathale said these tools of trade will make it easier for the Hawks to fly higher.
