Sundowns leading master drummer to be laid to rest this weekend

The master drummer from Nellmapius was known as one of the heartbeats among supporters at stadiums, famous for beating the drums while the rest of the fans sang club songs.

The legendary crowd puller of Mamelodi Sundowns club and fans, John Black Madumo known as “Master Drum”, will be laid to rest this weekend.

“Master Drum” was 42 years old when he died after a short illness on Sunday.

He is survived by his three sisters and his brother.

“The passing of this master drummer came as a shock to everyone who knew him at the Mamelodi Sundowns fan club and his family,” said the national supporter co-ordinator of Mamelodi Sundowns, Cedric Moela.

He said Madumo loved Mamelodi Sundown’s club and attended Sundowns matches knowing that he was going to do what he loved most –entertaining Sundowns fans and motivating the players with his drum.

He restored order on the stand and every Sundowns supporter wanted to be next to him to be entertained throughout the match and after the match when he also entertained the Mamelodi Sundowns club.

John Black “Master Drum” Madumo will be buried on Saturday at Heatherly cemetery.

Moela further said he grew up with Madumo and they even went to the same primary school.

He said singing was his passion and he loved soccer.

“Unfortunately he never played, but we started supporting Sundowns together until we were able to go to stadium to watch our favourite team.”

A memorial service will be held on Thursday afternoon.

Madumo will be buried on Saturday.

A service will also be held at Nellmapius extension 2 at house no 5061, Malebo Street, from 08:00 to 10:00 when they will proceed to Heatherley cemetery.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media.

Supporters posted numerous videos of Madumo in action.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane said “my condolences to Masandawana. The loss of Bra John Black Madumo comes with great shock. I know his presence will be missed in the stands.

“The sound of him beating that drum I donated to him not only kept the supporters going but motivated us and the players. Rest in peace,” said Mosimane.

“May your drumbeat remain throughout the yellow nation forever.”
