Over 1 200 people arrested in police operations

More than a thousand people were arrested during operations in Tshwane by police and other law enforcement agencies over the weekend.

“The integrated multidisciplinary operations resulted in over 1 200 people being arrested for various crimes,” provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said.

Crimes included possession of unlicensed and illegal firearms, drunk driving, dealing in drugs, and possession of stolen vehicles.

An undisclosed number of undocumented foreign nationals were also among those who were arrested in these operations.

The operations in Tshwane were led by acting provincial police commissioner Major General Girly Mbele. Other law enforcement agencies such as the traffic department, Tshwane metro police department, the immigration unit from the Department of Home Affairs, CPFs, Tracker and Fidelity were also involved.

“We seized dangerous weapons, drugs, liquor, firearms, ammunition and impounded vehicles with tampered engine numbers,” Sello said.

Those who were arrested during the operations in Tshwane, Johannesburg, Sedibeng, Ekurhuleni and West Rand were expected to start appearing in court on Monday.

The community was urged to work with the police to fight crime by reporting criminal activities on the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111 or reporting anonymously on the MySAPS app.
