The Ga-Rankuwa magistrate’s court reserved sentencing for convicted serial rapist Sbongiseni Njabulo Prince Ngwenya (25) after he allegedly denied his previous conviction.

Ngwenya was facing 48 counts which include rape, armed robbery, housebreaking and attempted murder.

He was found guilty on 38 counts: 16 rapes, nine armed robberies, 13 housebreakings and one attempted murder.

NPA spokesperson Herny Mamothame said Ngwenya denied his previous conviction and the matter was postponed to May 18-19 for the state to prove his previous conviction.

Mamothame said the case will thereafter go for sentencing.

He said these crimes were committed in Winterveldt and Klipgat.

“He was suspected of committing crimes in these areas and buccal (DNA from the cheek) was taken from him for DNA testing and it came back positive.

“He was linked to 18 cases. He was traced and arrested in Winterveldt. He was breaking into houses, robbing people of their belongings and raping them during the night.”

He said Ngwenya has been in custody ever since his arrest on September 1, 2018.
