Metro cops make several arrests over the weekend

Four foreign nationals were arrested at the Mooiplaas squatter camp after they were found in possession of stolen cables.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department arrested several people across the Tshwane area at the weekend.

Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said four foreign nationals were arrested at the Mooiplaas squatter camp after they were found in possession of stolen cables.

The Tshwane west crime intelligence and tactical and special operations unit followed up on information they had received about a suspicious Ford Ranger bakkie.

According to the information, the bakkie, which had six occupants, was going in the direction of the squatter camp.

“The team spotted the said bakkie and it was stopped. One suspect and the driver fled while the other four Zimbabwean nationals were apprehended,” Mahamba said.

Following a search of the vehicle, 50m of stolen copper cables and digging equipment were found.

The stolen cables were valued at an estimated R250 000.

“They were all arrested for cable theft,” he said.

Another foreign man was arrested on a charge of contravention of the Medicines and Related Substances Act, 1965 (Act 101 of 1965) after he was found in possession of 250 bottles of codeine cough mixture in the Olievenhoutbosch area.

Four more men and one woman were also arrested for dealing in dagga in the Soshanguve and New Eersterust areas by TMPD drug unit members.

“Five more suspects were arrested for interfering with official duties when they tried to stop officers from arresting their family members,” Mahamba said.

A man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition by TMPD tactical unit officers in the Olievenhoutbosch area.

“They stopped a suspicious white Isuzu bakkie with one suspect inside. His vehicle was searched and officers found a 9mm pistol with three rounds of ammunition,” he said.

Mahamba commended the TMPD for their hard work and dedication.

“We will continue to keep Tshwane safe,” he said.
