Stolen copper cable worth R250 000 seized in Centurion, four arrested
“Their vehicle was searched, and the officers found 50m of stolen copper cable with digging equipment.”
The Tshwane Metro Police Department and other security companies arrested four men in Mooiplaas squatter camp, Centurion, on Thursday, April 7.
This came after the TMPD, Tshwane West crime intelligence and special operations members worked closely to follow up on information received about a suspicious-looking vehicle.
TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said they received information about a Ford Ranger van with six men in it.
Mahamba said the TMPD officers followed up on the matter and managed to spot the car as it was on its way to Mooiplaas squatter camp.
He said when the police officers spotted the car, one suspect and the driver fled the scene on foot while the other four men stayed in the car.
The other four suspects were apprehended.
“Their vehicle was searched and the officers found 50m of stolen copper cable with digging equipment.
“The stolen cables have an estimated value of R250 000,” he said.
Mahamba said police are still determining which neighbourhood the cables were stolen from.
Cable theft continues to become a headache for Pretoria residents as many communities are left in the dark for hours and sometimes even days.
In March, Rekord reported on the escalating cases of cable theft in Monavoni, Centurion, where residents could go days without electricity.
Residents of Eersterust expressed their frustrations on the matter of cable theft, as it harms their businesses and livelihood.
Eersterust resident Taahirah Kalika said she cannot afford a generator to keep the lights on when cable theft hits.
She added that she runs a business from home and it is affected when there is no electricity.
Police urge anyone with information regarding cable theft to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
