Five foreign nationals sentenced for failing to produce legal documents
“We are going to arrest anyone who fails to produce legal documents to be in the country,” said Maheso.
The Mamelodi police have issued a stern warning to any illegal immigrants without proper documentation.
This came after five arrested illegal immigrants were recently sentenced to three months’ imprisonment each.
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the suspects were arrested after police organised a successful joint operation called Operation Okae Molao at various places in their precinct from 06:00 to 13:00 on March 12.
The accused were arrested in different places in Mamelodi. They are aged between 23 to 38.
“The Mamelodi magistrate’s court handed out sentences of three months each or ordered them to pay fines ranging from R2 000 to R6 000,” said Maheso.
The suspects were arrested after they failed to produce legal documentation to be in the country, he added.
The Mamelodi court handed out the sentences from March 15 to 24.
Maheso warned illegal immigrants to fix their documents or face the full might of the law.
The police want to assure the public that they are not just sitting and doing nothing about illegal immigrants, he added.
“We are going to arrest anyone who fails to produce legal documents to be in the country,” said Maheso.
Maheso added that Operation Okae Molao was a joint operation between the police, metro police, Gauteng traffic department, Prasa, Home affairs, correctional services and Tracker, and would continue for the rest of the year.
The law enforcers focus on different activities including stop-and-searches, compliance at liquor operations and foreign spaza shops, high visibility around hotspots and roadblocks in Mamelodi.
