Former Tshwane MMC for utilities, Phillip Nel, dies
Phillip Nel served as a ward councillor for ward 42 in Pretoria East and was appointed MMC for utility services in November 2020.
Tshwane ward 42 councillor and MMC for utilities and regional operations, Phillip Nel, has died at the age of 73.
This was confirmed by friend and fellow councillor Siobhan Muller, who said Nel died on Thursday afternoon.
“It is with great sadness that I need to let you know that our friend and colleague Phillip Nel passed away at 13:30 today [Thursday],” Muller said.
“He was surrounded by his family. “It’s a great loss to the community, his ward, to us as friends and colleagues, to the council.”

Nel’s death comes a day after it was announced that he would not be able to continue with his duties as MMC due to health issues.
Mayor Randall Williams announced that ward 47 councillor Daryl Johnston would be replacing him.
Nel had been unwell since January, which led to him being hospitalised.
Although he was in hospital, Nel attended council meetings virtually.
Colleagues have since shared messages of condolences on social media:
