Soshanguve principal robbed at school

The gunmen robbed him of his wallet and a cellphone before fleeing the scene on foot.

The principal at the Senthibele Senior Secondary School in Soshanguve Block R survived four gunshots fired at him by two gunmen when he arrived at the school on Tuesday morning.

The gunmen robbed him of his wallet and a cellphone before fleeing the scene on foot.

“It happened around 06:30,” said Rietgat police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.

“His cellphone and wallet were missing from his car when the two suspects fled the scene.

“His car was damaged but he was not injured by the shots.”

Maluleka said a case of attempted murder and malicious damage has been opened.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department was aware of the shooting.

“Information at our disposal states that the principal was approached by two gunmen when arriving at the school’s gate. Four shots were fired.

“The employee assistance wellness programme has been deployed at the school for necessary support and the robbery was reported to the police.”

A parent who has a child at the school, Martha Baloyi, said they are still shocked and feel that their children weren’t safe at the school.

“This incident made me even consider changing schools but I know I cannot. Our children are not safe on the streets and at school.

“The principal almost lost his life just for a cellphone and wallet. These criminals are all over – even in schools. I wish the police could patrol the schools in the area to make sure our children are safe.”
