Moot couple celebrates 65th wedding anniversary

It is through hard work, continuously choosing one another through sickness and through health through good times and the bad that they are able to celebrate a rare anniversary like this.

A couple from Queenswood Methodist old age home, celebrated a huge milestone at the home last week.

Douglas Reginald Commerford (89) and Maureen Gwendolyn Commerford (86) celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, April 13.

They met during a dance that Douglas attended.

Maureen was a blind date set up for him and it was love at first sight.

They are blessed with three children. Firstborn was daughter Vanessa Ras, then they had a son Mark William Commerford and later daughter Sandra Redgate.

Maureen and Douglas Commerford tied the knot on April 13 on 1957.

The Commerfords have eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and another two on the way.

Pastor Robert Greenland, who serves at the home, mentioned that one of the things that stood out for him the most was that Douglas and Maureen are always holding hands.

It is through hard work, continuously choosing one another through sickness and through health, through good times and the bad that they are able to celebrate a rare anniversary like this.

But most importantly through making God the centre and the foundation of their marriage. Their faith in Christ Jesus is and has been the key to their long and prosperous life together.

Douglas and Maureen Commerford celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last week.

Because they met through dancing and have always danced whenever the occasion arose, Douglas thought what better way to honour his wife of 65 years than reading Al Jolson’s “Anniversary Song” to her:

“Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed
We vowed our true love, though a word wasn’t said
The world was in bloom, there were stars in the skies
Except for the few that were there in your eyes

Dear, as I held you close in my arms
Angels were singing a hymn to your charms
Two hearts gently beating, murmuring low
Darling, I love you so

The night seemed to fade into blossoming dawn
The sun shone anew but the dance lingered on
Could we but recall that sweet moment sublime
We’d find that our love is unaltered by time

Darling, I love you so

The night seemed to fade into blossoming dawn
The sun shone anew but the dance lingered on
Could we but recall that sweet moment sublime
We’d find that our love is unaltered by time.”
