Thousands arrested in weekend operations
In Tshwane, more than 400 people were arrested for various offences.

At least 1 600 people were arrested in police operations conducted in the Gauteng province over the weekend.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said of these, 320 were arrested for drug-related crimes while 139 were arrested for gender-based violence.
More than 300 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested as well.
“Other suspects were arrested during O Kae Molao operations that were led by the provincial commissioner and district commissioners,” he said.
In Tshwane, more than 400 people were arrested during an operation led by provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela.
Offences included possession of stolen and hijacked vehicles; possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition; house robbery; assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of drugs.
“Twenty-four illegal liquor outlets were also closed down and the alcohol confiscated,” Masondo said.
In the Ekurhuleni area, more than 490 people were arrested during an operation led by Major-General Anna Sithole and 200 others were arrested in the West Rand area during operations led by Major-General Fred Kekana.
They were arrested for offences which included murder; selling liquor without a license; robbery; possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition; assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious property damage.
In the Sedibeng and Johannesburg districts, 128 and 370 people were arrested for offences such as driving under the influence of alcohol; assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; possession of stolen property; contravening the Immigration Act; car hijacking; sexual assault; possession of drugs; rape; house robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm.
All those arrested were expected to appear in court soon.
