Boko Haram gang member arrested in Mamelodi

The suspect from Silverton is linked to three business robberies in Mamelodi in 2020 and two in 2021.

Police have apprehended a member of the so-called Boko Haram gang in Mamelodi this week.

The 38-year-old man was arrested in Denneboom on Tuesday, according to police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili.

The Boko Haram gang is accused of extortion, hijacking construction projects, demanding protection fees from business owners, intimidating and hijacking a municipal building.

The suspect, from Silverton, was linked to three business robbery cases registered in Mamelodi in January 2020 and two in November 2021.

The team that arrested him comprised members from provincial crime intelligence, Tshwane district taxi violence crime intelligence gathering and detectives.

TMPD officers were also part of the team.

“I commend the team that worked together to ensure that those who terrorise the community are hunted down and brought to book,” said Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mawela.

“This arrest will help us to close gang-related cases committed in Mamelodi over the past few years.”
