Maritimo give up on top-four dream
Pretoria Athletic FC shutter Maritimo’s dream to complete the Regional League in the top four.
The Club Sport Maritimo on Tuesday announced that they had failed to achieve their main objective for the season of finishing the Safa Tshwane Regional League in the top four.
Hatfield outfit head coach Selby “Sfuba” Sihlangu revealed this after his side suffered a humiliating 1-3 defeat at the hands of Pretoria Athletic Football Club at the TUT sports ground in Soshanguve two days earlier.
“It is clear now that we stand no chance to complete the league in the top four,” Sfuba told Rekord.
He said their failure to achieve their goal was because of their poor performance against Pretoria Athletic Football Club last Saturday.
“We planned to win all remaining games to make it into the top four,” he said, citing that the only feasible objective now was to fight for completing the league matches in the top eight.
Explaining the reason for the loss, he said he did not have enough players to participate in the game owing to the long weekend and injuries.
Several key players did not attend the match while others had some injuries, he said.
He said players who did not pitch up for the match included Tebatso Marema, Mulayo Ndou, Naphathan Motolla, Koketso Mnisi and Dumisani Mhlangeni.
Injured players included Unkemetsi Ratshilavhi, Jermaine Adams, Neo Mohajane and Rufus Sackie Jr.
Maritimo are in position nine of the log standings with 34 points in 25 matches. They are left with three games to play before the end of the season.
They will play University of Pretoria Football Club at Maritimo sports ground on Saturday at 15:30.
