No arrests as man killed in N4 highway rock-trap travelling with nine-month-old baby and wife

Police investigate second N4 murder to determine if it was related to a road-trap crime as man found dead in a car with no front tyres.

No arrests have been made following the killing of two men in unrelated suspected “rock trap” attacks on the N4 highway between Pretoria and Brits this weekend.

In the first attack, a 25-year-old man, who was travelling with his wife and nine-month-old baby, was shot in the head after they drove over rocks on the highway near the Brits Plaza tollgate.

His wife was shot in the hand but the baby was not harmed.

“The man was replacing a flat tyre when three unknown suspects with guns overpowered the victim and robbed him of a Nokia cellphone,” said police spokesperson Captain Aafje Botma.

He was shot in the head and died on the scene.

The family was travelling from Pretoria towards Brits.

The incident was reported at around 21:00 on Saturday, May 7.

Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. No arrests have been made.

In the second attack in the early hours of the same day, a man was found dead with bullet wounds in a green Audi on the N4 highway near the M17/Ga-Rankuwa off-ramp.

The car had no front tyres and the man had bullet wounds to his upper and lower body, according to Akasia police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mabasa.

Mabasa said the police could not, however, confirm whether the murder was related to a rock trap on the highway. She said the murder investigation would also offer clarity as to whether the incident was a road trap related crime incident.

Road-related crimes have been an issue in Pretoria over the past few years.

In October 2020, the police arrested nine men linked to a spate of robberies in the Magalies Mountain area along the R80 Mabopane highway.

The suspects are accused of armed robberies and other serious crimes committed on the R80 Mabopane highway after several cases were reported.
