North woman forced into car at gunpoint, robbed and accosted

Once she got into the car, sitting at the back, he lowered the passenger seat and pushed her down with it.

Police in the north of Pretoria warned women in the area to be careful following an incident in which a resident was robbed and sexually accosted after she was forced into a car at gunpoint.

The resident reported on a community group that she was robbed at gunpoint on Monday evening in the vicinity of Wonderpark.

According to the woman, who was in her 20s, she was approached by a man in a car who told her at gunpoint to get into the vehicle.

Once she got into the car, sitting at the back, he lowered the passenger seat and pushed her down with it.

“He drove towards the community hall near Wonderpark Mall. He took my phone and cash and the Wi-Fi router I had on me.

She said the robber then hit her a couple of times.

“He then proceeded to unzip my trousers and started to touch me. He took off his seatbelt and got out of the car.”

That was when the woman managed to get out of the car and escape.

She described her assailant as “a young guy; late 20s, maybe early 30s” who drove a silver Nissan hatchback.

Akasia police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mabasa said women should avoid going out at night alone and always have proper transport plans in place.

“Women tend to fall prey to perpetrators as the country is struggling to fight GBV cases.

“They should share their location with their friends and families when going out, particular with the live location option available on WhatsApp messenger and any other platforms at their disposal.”

When travelling in e-hailing taxis, women should send the vehicle’s registration number, make and colour as well as a short description of the driver to their friends.

“When going out to parties, women should avoid going out when they don’t have cash and also avoid leaving their drinks unattended.

“Should they suspect any illegal activities and feel that their lives are in danger, they should not hesitate to contact the police on 112 free from their cellphone and seek out their nearest police station.

They can contact the Akasia police on 012 564 0700 or dial 10111.
