Shots fired in thwarted robbery, suspects disappear into Pretoria east informal settlement

Driver of a tobacco delivery van and security officers escorting the van were attacked on Tuesday.

After a foiled robbery of a tobacco delivery van, two suspects, also facing attempted murder charges, disappeared into an informal settlement in the east of Pretoria escaping security officers and police on Tuesday.

Security officers escorting a tobacco delivery van were attacked by armed suspects driving a white BMW on the Bronkhorspruit road near the N4 gateway light industrial security park on Tuesday morning.

“Shots were fired at the unmarked security officers’ vehicle, which was escorting the delivery van.
“Inside the escorting vehicle there were two security officers,” Police spokesperson Isaac Mculu said.

After that, Mculu said, the armed suspects in the White BMW made an abrupt stop in front of the delivery van, forcing it to stop.

Mculu said two armed suspects went to the delivery van, pushed the driver to the back seat and drove the van to Nellmapius.

“The suspects stopped at Phedisano Street in Nellmapius. It was reported that the suspects were waiting for a vehicle which they allegedly planned to load the tobacco into,” Mculu said.

The plan was thwarted as the security officers caught-up with the suspects.
“When the security officers got where the suspects were, a shoot-out ensued as the officers were again shot at by the suspects. The officers returned fire. The suspects ran and disappeared among the shacks of the Mavuso informal settlement,” Mculu said.

When the police arrived the suspects had already fled on foot.

“The police are investigating a case of attempted murder and robbery,” he said. No one was injured during the shoot-out.
