Mams, Nellmapius youth learn about horses at funfest

The programme was purposefully created as a way of introducing different horse riding disciplines and grooming to the enthusiastic young and old participants.

Children in Mamelodi, Nellmapius and surrounding areas came in their numbers to experience horse riding and learn about horses at the Inaugural Horsemanship funfest on Saturday.

The event was held at Misty Meadows in collaboration with The Invincible U-turn Ranch and Askhabe Equestrian Lifestyle.

Peter Selolo of Invincible U-turn Ranch said the programme was purposefully created as a way of introducing different horse riding disciplines and grooming to the enthusiastic young and old participants.

“Our young leaders, coming from various backgrounds, with different life experiences, were taught about basic ground work in show jumping, roping, grooming and barrel riding.”

Legendary horse riding showmen such as Colin Miles, Francois Loggenberg and Peter Selolo showcased their horse riding skills by entertaining, educating as well as creating memorable experiences for the young children.

“The day’s lessons also included live demonstrations and exposure to professions like Equine dentistry and farriery and blacksmith career paths among others,” said Selolo.

Invincible U-Turn Ranch was formed in 2016 as an NPO to assist community leaders and government develop children’s skills in horse riding and related fields with the view to creating jobs.

Thapelo Mokwena (20) said he had a wonderful time at the funfest.

“I never knew that there was a lot to learn about horses and I am definitely considering a career in the horse industry.”

Selolo said he was privileged and honoured to share the day with everyone who came to support the event.

“We look forward to hosting many more events of this nature and hope that our next event is bigger and better than the last.”
