Nellmapius murder accused denied bail
The suspected killer handed himself over to Lebowakgomo police in Limpopo province after months on the run.
The Pretoria regional court this week denied Kenneth Majozi Debeila (31) bail in the murder case against him for allegedly murdering his girlfriend and 11-year-old daughter.
Itumeleng Beverly Makhura (31) went missing after she was last seen with Debeila at a local tavern in Nellmapius. She was later found dead under her boyfriend’s bed, with her 11-year-old daughter dead on top of the bed in the accused’s backyard room.
The accused, who has been on the run for several months, handed himself over to the police at Lebowakgomo in Limpopo province. He briefly appeared in court on Tuesday.
Bail was denied and the accused will remain in police custody. The case was remanded to July 14.
Emotions ran high outside the Pretoria regional court as non-profit organisations, that travelled from Nellmapius and Mamelodi, displayed placards against gender-based violence, calling on the court not to grant the accused bail.
Themba Masango of #NotInMyName said the organisations were there in support of the victims and wanted to see that justice prevails for the Makhura family.
In a recent statement released by the police, Colonel Dimakatso Sello said the manhunt for Debeila ended on June 14, when the suspect handed himself over to police
“Police had been searching for the suspect who was on the run after he reportedly murdered his girlfriend and her child on March 20 at Nellmapius,” said Sello.
According to information, the victims were choked to death and the child was raped.
“The circumstance surrounding the incident is being investigated,” she said.
