Two killed in N1 collision

A female passenger was stabilised on the scene and taken to a nearby hospital.

Two people were killed in a head-on collision between two vehicles on the N1 South near John Vorster Drive before midnight on Thursday morning.

“Both drivers sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead on the scene,” said Kyle van Reenen from Emer-G-Med.

He said a female passenger from one of the vehicles suffered serious injuries and was treated and stabilised on the scene by paramedics before being taken to a nearby hospital.

Van Reenen urged motorists to be extra vigilant when driving at night by keeping their headlights on and ensuring they have had enough sleep before getting into their cars.

Drivers should also be more aware of others, especially oncoming traffic and not drive with their headlights on bright.

The Automobile Association (AA) said it was important to understand how to drive safely at night.

They advised motorists to follow the following safety tips:

– Have a clear route planned.

– Ensure that your headlights and brake lights are in working order.

– If towing, make sure the brake lights and indicators are connected properly and functioning well.

– Keep rear and front windscreens clean and make sure your defogger is working.

– Avoid keeping your gaze focused at a single distance, as this can cause eye fatigue.

– Turn your headlights on before sunset and keep them on after sunrise.

– Don’t blind other motorists with your headlights.

– Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead of you.

– Drive slower at night.

– Ensure you are well rested before getting behind the wheel at night.

“Also make sure that you are comfortable and able to negotiate driving at night before heading off on a long trip,” the AA warned.
