Wierda dump site clean up was a by-law enforcement operation, metro

The metro said they will be conducting anti-illegal dumping education campaigns.

A recent clean-up operation at Wierda Road was a “by-law enforcement operation” to stop illegal dumping, according to the Tshwane metro.

Following an article about the dump site, the metro elaborated on their actions regarding dumping sites.

“In such operations, the department responsible for waste-related matters issues contravention notices to the offenders and give them an opportunity to comply by removing waste from the site.

“It is only when the offenders fail to comply, that the council would go in to remove the waste from the site,” said their statement.

When asked about the availability of recycling centres in Centurion, they gave the following response:

“There are a number of privately owned waste management facilities around the city that promote waste recycling.

“In addition to these facilities, the metro also operates three buy-back centre facilities in Atteridgeville, Stinkwater and Ga-Rankuwa.

“Our long-term strategy is to facilitate or encourage waste separation at source to support recycling of waste.

“This would take different forms, which may include among other initiatives, the establishment of more buy-back centres as well as waste sorting facilities,” the metro added.

When asked about their plans to curb illegal dumping in the future, the metro stated:

“In addition to the illegal dumping clearing programme, we also implemented the anti-illegal dumping education campaigns, the mayoral Tswelopele clean-up programme as well as the Adopt-a-Spot programme.

“All these are efforts by the city to curb dumping of waste.”

The metro added that they “did not undertake relocation operations at the site in question”.
