After passing the vehicle, the unit decided to inspect it. When the driver saw the police vehicle turning around, he started speeding and this is when police gave chase.

Two suspects, aged 28 and 39, were arrested by the Pretoria Moot crime prevention unit after a high-speed chase in Rietondale.

Car-breaking equipment was found in their possession.

The crime prevention unit at Moot was on a routine patrol in the Riviera area on Wednesday, when they spotted a white Hyundai Getz with two men inside.

The men acted suspiciously after noticing the police.

After passing the vehicle, the unit decided to inspect it. When the driver saw the police vehicle turning around, he started speeding and this is when the police gave chase.

According to Captain Anton Breedt of Pretoria Moot police, the driver tried to escape from them.

“The vehicle was forced off the road after the passenger pointed a firearm at the officers.

“After securing the two men, police searched their vehicle and found a bag in the back containing two sets of vehicle number plates, gloves, tools and electrical appliances used to steal motor vehicles,” Breedt said.

A plastic replica pistol was also discovered in the vehicle.

The two suspects were placed under arrest and faced charges of possession of car-breaking equipment and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“The vehicle was impounded for further investigation and to see whether it was a stolen vehicle.

“The suspects appeared in the Pretoria magistrate’s court.

“The case was postponed for further investigations,” he said.

Pretoria Moot station commander Colonel Hlengeni Giben Mashaba applauded the unit for their initiative.

“We would like to send a stern warning to criminals in vehicle theft syndicates that we will continue deploying officers on random days to address property- and vehicle-related crimes with random stop-and-search operations,” he said.
