Suspected drunk driver in hospital after collision on R55 road
It was reported that the driver did not stop at the non-functional traffic lights between Laudium and Erasmia.
A motorist sustained critical injuries following a collision allegedly caused by a drunk driver on the R55 road between Laudium and Erasmia.
According to a response officer for the Laudium Disaster Management, Mohammed Amin, the collision happened on Sunday evening, June 26, around 18:00.
Amin said a Kia Picanto with two people inside, was travelling towards Centurion when it failed to stop at non-functional traffic lights and collided with a blue BMW.
He said the Kia Picanto flipped over the centre median barrier and landed on the road used by traffic going in the opposite direction.
“We suspect that the driver of the Kia Picanto was under the influence of alcohol.
“We found bottles and cans of alcohol inside the vehicle after the car accident,” Amin said.

Amin added that the cans and bottles could have burst open during the collision so that they were open did not necessarily mean the passenger or driver had opened them.
He said a man sustained critical injuries to the head and a woman moderate injuries.
The driver of the BMW was not severely injured, Amin added.
