Welfa league champions ready for playoffs
Olieven Stars now prepare to fight for winning the LFA’s play-offs in order to advance to the next level.
The West-End Local Football Association League champions, Olieven Stars, want to win the 2021/2022 Safa Tshwane Local Football Association Regional League Play-offs so as to advance to the Safa Tshwane Regional League division in the next soccer season.
Olieven Stars head coach Lucky Duiker revealed this on Sunday after his side defeated Tshwane Sporting 2-0 in a walk-over match at the Defence sports ground in Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria.
“I have a good squad and a full confidence in it,” Duiker said.
He believed his side would do well in the playoffs should the players follow his instructions.
“We stand a good chance to win in the playoffs.”
The team, which was formed in 2015 and started participating in Safa’s recognised domestic league in 2020, began its preparations for the playoffs as early as Monday this week.
“We do not want the playoffs to find us ill-prepared.”
According to Safa Tshwane administrator Lerato Moshoeshoe, the playoffs are scheduled to take place on July 16, 17 and 23, 2022. The venue was still to be confirmed.
Moshoeshoe said at the moment they have only 13 teams that are allowed to participate in the league as other teams are still having pending cases against them.
“We still have outstanding disciplinary committee meetings to take place before we submit final logs standings,” she said.
At the time of going to press, Moshoeshoe was not in a position to provide the names of the affected teams.
However, according to Duiker, under normal circumstances, a total of 15 teams representing all Safa Tshwane LFAs would have to participate in the play-offs, which suggests that two out of 15 teams were still to be announced.
“All I can say is that 15 LFA teams should be fighting for their spot in the Safa Tshwane Regional league come 2021/2022 LFA’s play-offs.”
Despite having a tough season, Stars’ victory was an easy task in the end.
Before the final match, the team had 65 points on the log standings while their main rivals Waterkloof Juventus had 63 points. Since Stars had a huge margin goal difference in their favour, it meant they were supposed to draw or win their final match against Tshwane Sporting to win the league. They had a goal difference of 28 goals in their favour against their main rivals.
On the other hand, Juventus were supposed to win their final match against West City Spartan and Stars lost their final match for Juventus to win the league – which was a difficult task.
Secondly, Stars’ victory was an easy task at the end because Sporting failed to attend the match leading to a walk-over, which was a victory that guaranteed Stars the final number one spot in the log standings.
Stars completed the league matches leading the log standings with 68 points in 26 games, while their main rivals finished second with 63 points in also 26 games.
Juventus completed the league matches with 63 points after 3 – 2 loss to West City Spartan on Sunday.
