Five easy ways to help the less fortunate
Help your fellow struggling South Africans through these five ways.
The cold and rainy weather conditions this winter in Pretoria are making the lives of those less fortunate more difficult as they are unable to keep warm or have access to warm meals.
“While many South Africans can take refuge in their homes, dress up in layers and keep warm with blankets, heaters or fireplaces, many are not so lucky,” Irvine Partners business unit director Kelly Fisher said.
“Homelessness and poverty were major issues even before the pandemic, but with jobs and homes lost, these issues were exacerbated,” she said.
“Even more people are struggling to make ends meet, keep warm and put food on the table.”
She said while the ever-increasing cost of living was a setback to millions of South Africans who are already struggling, this may be easily avoided when people who can share choose one of five ways to make a difference in society.
According to Fisher, the five ways will not cost a fortune.
They include volunteering at a feeding programme of your choice, donating a blanket, adding just one thing to your shopping list for the less fortunate, donating your pre-loved clothes and giving a little to night shelters.
She explained that volunteering at a feeding programme of your choice was about providing your time, for example, helping with meal preparation or dishing up at the drop-off points.
Donating a blanket during winter is an easy way to give back to the community, she said.
“Also, you don’t need to donate a whole trolley of goods if you can’t. However, if you can, consider adding just one additional item to your shopping cart every month.”
She said non-perishable or long-life goods such as lentils, long-life milk, beans, tinned goods and rice can make a big difference to someone’s life.
These can be donated to a religious organisation, NGO or any other programmes that you know of in your area.
With regards to donating your pre-loved clothes, she said these should be items that you no longer need or wear.
Finally, donating money to night shelters should be considered.
