Govt departments back on power grid

Work at the Pretoria magistrate’s court, the Pretoria Central police station and other state departments was hindered for more than five days due to a flooded substation.

The Tshwane metro has restored power to several government institutions in the Pretoria CBD after a substation housed in the Gauteng provincial government’s building was found flooded last week Wednesday.

In addition to the provincial government, the Pretoria magistrate’s court, the Pretoria Central police station, the national Department of Social Development, the Department of Land Affairs and Rural Development, along with traffic support systems, were also affected.

The cause of the flooding was not yet known, according to Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba.

Bokaba said the water level was 2 300mm deep.

“Technicians managed to successfully drain out the water. They cleaned and dried out the panels to the substation that was flooded.”

Cases at the magistrate’s court were postponed last week due to the outages, according to justice department spokesperson Steve Mahlangu.
