Man nabbed for car hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearm

The car was hijacked in Sunnyside, spotted in Olievenhoutbosch and found by the TMPD in Jeppestown.

The TMPD and other law enforcement agencies arrested a man who was found to be in possession of a hijacked car.

The car was hijacked in Sunnyside but was later found in Jeppestown on Tuesday, said TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.

Mahamba said the arrest came after TMPD officers held an operation following information received about a suspect who was in possession of a hijacked vehicle.

He said the officers followed up on the information on where the car was spotted in Olievenhoutbosch.

“This led the officers to Jeppestown where the vehicle was found at a residence with one suspect.

“The vehicle was searched and one firearm was found under the driver’s seat,” he said.

Mahamba said the suspect was then arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and an unlicensed firearm. He said the car was confirmed to have been hijacked in Sunnyside.

“Upon further questioning, the suspect revealed that he worked for another male suspect who was already being sought by police for crimes that include vehicle theft.

“The suspect is believed to be from Swaziland and he allegedly smuggles the stolen vehicles across the border,” said Mahamba.

He added that more investigations will follow.

Mahamba urged the public who might have more information regarding these crimes to contact their nearest police station or the TMPD at 012 358 7095/6.
