Woman seriously injured in hit and run

“The vehicle that stuck the patient reportedly fled the scene,”

A woman was seriously injured when she was struck by a vehicle on the corner of Old Johannesburg and Panorama roads on Tuesday evening.

Emergency service CERT-SAT representative Ruan Heyns said the pedestrian in her 20s was immediately rushed to hospital in a critical condition under advanced life support care.

“The vehicle that stuck the patient reportedly fled the scene,” he said.

“There is unfortunately no further details about the vehicle.”

Kyle van Reenen of emergency service Emer-G-Med urged motorists to be extra vigilant by keeping their headlights on at night and ensuring they had enough sleep before getting behind the wheel.

He said drivers should also be considerate of others, especially oncoming traffic and not drive with their headlights on bright.

The Automobile Association (AA) gave the following safety tips for safely driving at night:
– Have a clear route plan.
– Ensure your headlights and brake lights are in working order.
– When towing, ensure the brake lights and indicators are connected properly and functioning well.
– Keep rear and front windscreens clean and ensure your defogger is working.
– Avoid keeping your gaze at a single distance, as this can cause eye fatigue.
– Turn your headlights on before sunset and keep them on.
– Don’t blind other motorists with your headlights.
– Maintain a safe following distance.
– Drive slower at night.
– Ensure you are well rested before getting behind the wheel.

“Also make sure that you are comfortable on a long trip,” the AA warned.
