Residents warned to beware fake firefighters
Bogus criminals now pose as firefighters and demand cash payments to residents in need of emergency services.
The Tshwane emergency services department urged residents to beware of criminals who pose as firefighters to scam people out of their money.
The department has recently received several complaints from community members around Tshwane about a group of unknown people who claim to be firefighters and demand payment for services.
Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the fire department does not accept cash payments for services rendered.
“No staff member is authorised to demand payment before or after the service action.
“Services rendered by the emergency services department are billed in line with the metro’s billing system and payments for fire safety services are only made into a bank account provided for such,” said Mabaso.
He added that investigations have been initiated and the emergency department is working hard to find the suspects responsible for scamming residents.
Mabaso urged residents who may have information about this to report it to the chief of emergency services at emergencyservices@tshwane.gov.za or to call the City of Tshwane fraud hotline on 080 874 9263.
