Brace yourself for long-term road upgrades in Centurion
The R101 (Old Pretoria Road) upgrades will include new interchanges, consisting of new on-ramps and off-ramps.
From July 15, motorists using the R101, Old Pretoria Road will be diverted to alternative routes to make way for upgrades of a new dual carriageway on the passage.
The lengthy roadworks are expected to be concluded in 15 months.
The R101 phase 1 upgrades will affect the Old Pretoria/Johannesburg Road from N1 Rooihuiskraal interchange to Road D795 (Midrand).
Gauteng Department of Road and Transport (GPDRT) spokesperson Melitah Madiba said the new interchange would consist of new on-ramps and off-ramps to Road R101.
“The planned road upgrades will improve traffic flow and road safety.”
Madiba said the project would also create various job opportunities in the immediate area.
She said the upgrades would include a new bridge at the K27 interchange.
Madiba said the roadworks would also affect motorists using the Allan Road and Elevation Ave intersections.
“The old Olifantsfontein Road (M38 / R537) will be used as a detour between Olifantsfontein and Road R101 and will be signposted accordingly. Similarly, this road is marked in yellow on the diagram.”
The department apologised for any inconvenience during the improvement project.
The upgrades arrive after Gauteng road and transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo committed to his department to spending R2.5-billion on transport infrastructure projects in the province.
The projects include planning, design, construction and maintenance.
On the need for prudent and responsible spending, Mamabolo said the province had appointed an independent and reputable legal firm to help manage time, costs and quality of transport infrastructure delivery.
The upgrades follow residents decrying the high number of accidents on the Old Johannesburg Road R101 between Panorama Road and Lenchen Avenue in Eldoraigne, Centurion.
Last year, residents cited accidents on the bridge over the N14-Krugersdorp highway in front of Centurion Lifestyle Centre.
