North shopping centre joins school sanitary pad campaign

"Not being able to afford this basic necessity results in learners missing school every month and, in certain instances, dropping out of school altogether."

A shopping centre in the north of Pretoria and its partners have launched a campaign to collect a million sanitary pads to donate to township schoolchildren.

“The Support Our School (SOS) campaign wants to take the burden of buying sanitary necessities off the shoulders of the young women in the township,” said Donald Mclellan, a spokesperson for the owners of Montana Crossing shopping centre.

He said the campaign hoped to collect one million sanitary pads to donate to children in need.

The centre, along with three other participating shopping centres, had already donated 2 250 pads so far.

“Not being able to afford this basic necessity results in learners missing school every month and, in certain instances, dropping out of school altogether,” he said.

He said the campaign started in July 2018 as a tribute to Nelson Mandela.

This year, the campaign chose to address the sanitary towel problem within schools.

“Hyperinflation, the cost of living and the high unemployment currently facing our country make it difficult to build a better future for all,” said Mclellan.

The campaign officially launched on July 18 and Pretorians can take part in the campaign by dropping their donation off at Montana Crossing.

“We are asking all individuals and businesses to participate – no matter how small or large your contribution, you can make a difference.

“There are lots of ways you can participate,” he said.

Residents can nominate a school they would like to receive the donation.

The campaign also needed volunteers to promote it at the shopping centre.

If residents are interested they can send a direct message to Montana Crossing on their Facebook page and they will provide them with more information.
