Illegal immigrant sentenced to three months in jail

A Zimbabwean teenager faces three months of jail time or a fine after being found guilty of being in the country illegally.

The Moretele magistrate’s court has sentenced a Zimbabwean man guilty of being in the country illegally to three months imprisonment or a R2 500 fine.

According to police communication officer Herman Moremi, Prince Mpofu (19) appeared in court last month following his arrest in Stinkwater, Hammanskraal, north of Tshwane, in July during a police operation in the area.

Mpofu had been unable to produce proper immigration documents and so was handed over to home affairs for verification of his status, which found he was in the country illegally.

Temba station commander Brigadier Johannes Tau said police operations like this help the police deal with different kinds of crimes at once, which enables many suspects to be traced and arrested.

He added that the police will respond to the call of the country to remove all the people who are in the country illegally. Read also>Beware VW Polo robbing people in Akasia – police

“Community members complain about illegal immigrants in our country and police are doing all to address that in positive ways, and they will continue to remove all illegal immigrants in the area,” he said.

He urged community members to continue working hand-in-hand with the police to fight crime.
