Gymnastic club needs donations after fire

The fire could not have come at a more inopportune time as many gymnasts who train there would be taking part in a big competition in two weeks’ time, according to the owner.

The Kwenante gymnastics sport centre in Pretoria has been severely damaged in a fire, leaving the future of the club and many of it’s athletes uncertain.

According to reports, the fire started in the trees around the outdoor gymnasium and soon destroyed much of the training apparatus including the trampoline.

Members of the community were reportedly quick to intervene and saved some of the equipment to prevent further destruction.

Club owner Carin Maxwell said the Euro- and black top trampolines suffered the most damage and are completely destroyed and unusable.

“This is a major setback and shock for the club and everyone that trains there.

“It is going to take a lot of money for us to replace those trampolines,” said Maxwell.

Maxwell thanked the Moregloed community, AfriForum Moot, Pro Shield, Kilnerpark security community policing, club parents and coaches for their timeous intervention.

“Without your help, the damage would have been far worse but thanks to your fast actions we were able to save most of our equipment.

“We appreciate each and every single person who was involved with helping us douse the flames with buckets of water,” said Maxwell.

She said the fire could not have come at a more inopportune time as many gymnasts who train there would be taking part in a big competition in two weeks’ time.

“The gymnasts have had to make alternative plans for where they train,” said Maxwell.

Maxwell said gymnasts have found alternative places to exercise and hopes that they are prepared enough once the tournament starts.

The gymnasium needs donations to replace the lost equipment and return gymnasts back for training.

Maxwell can be contacted on 061 416 4272 for more information regarding donations.
