Unfair load-shedding ‘untrue’
A screenshot doing the rounds appears to show that Soweto receives less load-shedding than more affluent areas. This information gives a misleading message, as the “Soweto” referred to is in KZN, which receives less load-shedding as a result of grid weaknesses caused by the floods earlier in the year.
Screenshots and messages doing the rounds on WhatsApp groups and social media claim that some areas received unfair amounts of load-shedding compared to others.
The messages claim that Soweto in Johannesburg receives less load-shedding than more affluent areas. However, the “Soweto” in the screenshot is actually the neighbourhood in eThekwini municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, as clearly shown in the EskomSePush load-shedding tracker app.
Soweto’s true load-shedding schedule shows that it is Stage 5 as other areas.
On Friday, September 23, Soweto West (block 7) would be load-shedding for seven and a half hours in total and Soweto East (block 5) and UJ Soweto (block 15) 10 and a half hours.
Eskom said that system emergencies could introduce protections that result in exclusion from load-shedding schedules.
Areas of KZN receive less load-shedding than other provinces due to the flooding earlier this year. The damage from the floods means that the infrastructure in KZN is fragile and more vulnerable to damage caused by load-shedding.
