Ga-Rankuwa residents walk for the future of local kids

In a quest to address social ills, Tona Maroke, Tidimalo Moroeng and Tumisane Menyoko walked from Ga-Rankuwa to Hammanskraal to seek donations to take kids to Western Cape.

Members of a Ga-Rankuwa church have walked 36km to raise funds for eight kids travelling to Mossel Bay, Western Cape.

House of Prayer full gospel church of God pastor Tona Maroke and volunteers Tidialo Moroeng of Tlipgat and Tumisane Menyoko of Ga-Rankuwa walked from Ga-Rankuwa to Hammanskraal to raise funds to send the Grade 7 learners for secondary school preparation classes.

Maroke said they decided to walk because they realised that not all parents had the money to pay for the trip.

“These kids are from a rural area called Dilupye in Hammanskraal and most of their parents are single or the kids’ live with their grandmothers,” he said

Maroke added that most of these guardians are unemployed.

He said the trip would cost R9 000 and they had raised R4 780 so far.

He said the walk was long and tiring.

“We were walking holding posters and giving away letters to local businesses asking for donations and people responded but we still need to get to our target,” he said.

He said the trip was part of their Leeto La Bophelo (Journey of Life) project to help kids prepare for the future.

“The journey of life is emotional, social and educational,” he said.

He added that they want to walk with the learners on their journey all the way to tertiary.

“We will do this until they grow up to be adults who can raise their own families hence these trips. We want to expose them to different things to help them see that they can do a lot of things to redress social ills,” he said.

Maroke said that the project also helps to combat substance abuse.

He said during the walk, they were discussing living under apartheid.

“We spoke about the exclusion from opportunities and living so far from cities,” he said.

He said it was their responsibility as young men and leaders to help the the next generation rebuild, defeat injustice and inequality.

“We need to think creatively and help them find solutions for themselves instead of waiting for politicians,” he said.
