Convicted Pretoria hotel rapist still not sentenced due to incomplete report
The NPA requested for postponement due to an outstanding pre-sentencing report.
A 47-year-old man, who was found guilty of raping two minor girls aged 11 and 13 at the Pretoria Hotel, is still awaiting sentencing as the case was postponed by the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Thursday due to an outstanding report.
The man was convicted by the court of kidnapping and raping the minors.
He appeared in court on Thursday wherein the NPA was supposed to present a pre-sentence report. The report is an investigation into the social and legal background of the accused to determine the severity or leniency of a sentence.
The NPA requested a postponement, citing that the report was not completed and needed more documents from key state sources in the minors’ case.
“The report is not yet ready. A list of sources still needs to be consulted to finalise the report,” the NPA argued.
Magistrate Thekiso postponed the case to November 10 for the presentation of the pre-sentence report and sentencing of the accused.
In the court gallery, the families of the minors expressed their disappointment with the postponement.
They said they had hoped that the man was going to be sentenced on Thursday.
The man was arrested in November 2020 at the Pretoria Hotel after being apprehended by patrons and staff. Hotel patrons and staff called police after the 11-year-old went knocking on the hotel room doors, saying they had been raped. At the time, the 13-year-old was still in the room with the man.
The man was charged with kidnapping the girls from Lotus Gardens near Atteridgeville before taking them to a liquor store. He then went to book a room at the Pretoria Hotel, where he raped both girls.
Sunnyside police officers arrested the man and took the girls to Steve Biko Academic Hospital for a rape kit. Both minors testified in court last month.
This was not the man’s first rape conviction. At the time of his arrest, the man was out on parole for the rape of an elderly woman.
