Traditional healer workshop planned for Mamelodi
The five-day workshop will teach healers about Western and traditional medicines.
An organisation is gearing up for a workshop to teach traditional healers in Mamelodi about their role and raise awareness about foreign-owned traditional chemists.
Collen Mabula of Traditional Healers Organisation’s (THO) Mamelodi branch said the workshop runs over five days of training the healers on Western and traditional medicines.
He said the workshop will focus on the management of chronic diseases such as TB, HIV/Aids, cancer, diabetes and family planning from 7 to 11 November at Matimba Library in Mamelodi east ext. 5.
Traditional healers who attend the five-day workshop will receive certificate on completion.

Mabula added that they are encouraging traditional healers to join forces with the police in the fight against crime within the community.
Traditional healers are also advised against ill-treating their students and support for witchcraft.
“The certificates offered by THO are to certify traditional healers as qualified traditional healers after completing the workshop, because the workshop aims to teach traditional healers about the role of traditional healers in the community, how the sangomas can work together with the police, clinics and councillors, and how to treat patients and students,” he added.
All the certificates are to be renewed every year.
In addition, the Mvuselelo awareness campaign will embark on a peaceful march after the workshop to reclaim foreign-owned traditional chemists.
The campaign occurs against the backdrop of a call by Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi’ to reclaim all spaza shops owned by foreign nationals in Gauteng, which Mamelodi THO branch supports.
“We will check if all foreign-owned traditional chemists comply, and owners have permits to work, and if they are qualified to work as traditional healers or herbalists,” he said.
He added that the campaign started after the organisation received complaints about people being tricked into buying poisonous medications.
The peaceful march will target mostly traditional chemists mostly at taxi ranks and shopping malls.
